Bashful Plum Bunny Jellycat toy How to tell if your Jellycat toys are real

With a vast range of retailers, both online and in person, now selling either genuine Jellycat toys or Jellycat dupes, it can be hard to know if the plushie you have purchased is the real deal.

So, how can you tell if your Jellycat toys are real?

Why does it matter if your Jellycat plush is a dupe?

Jellycat buyers often fall into one of two camps, those who would buy a dupe and those who never would.

For more general purchasers, buying a Jellycat dupe or fake may not matter, as it allows them to access the toys more easily and can often save them some money, due to their lower price point.

Jellycat collectors, however, would never knowingly buy a fake and generally, the reasons for this include:

Safety certification

Branded Jellycat toys are one of the only brands that meet the necessary UK and European safety standards that make them suitable from birth.

This gives gift-givers and receivers real peace of mind, as they know that the Jellycat plush they got as a gift is safe for their little ones.

Collector’s items

Because they are completely kooky and adorable and have short production runs, many Jellycat toys go on to become collectors’ items, making them much more valuable than their RRP.

If buyers unwittingly purchase a fake or a dupe, although it may seem a bargain, it can be almost worthless as it simply isn’t a real Jellycat-branded soft toy.

How to make sure your Jellycat toy is the real deal

So, if you’re concerned about fakes and dupes, how can you make sure you only buy real Jellycat-branded plushies?

Our easy-to-follow tips can be explored below:

  1. Be suspicious of shade changes

Jellycat plushies often receive minor tweaks if their run continues and although this can affect the shade of some soft toys, most Jellycat’s will retain their original colouring.

If you receive a toy that seems to be a different colour or shade than you expect, it may be a good sign that you have a fake or a dupe.

Notable exception: The original Bashful Plum Bunny was a USA-exclusive and was a much lighter grape colour than the 2020 Bashful Plum Bunny, which is considerably darker.

  • Check the Jellycat proportions

As well as slight colour changes, there are occasions when the design of some ranges has changed, including the famous Bashful Bunnies.

However, if you get a toy that appears out of proportion, this can be another clue. Some dupes or fakes can have overly large faces, oddly shaped eats, or limbs that are too long or short – all of which should be a giveaway that your toy may not be genuine.

  • Look at the tags

All Jellycat toys come with a fabric tag, usually on the base and a card swing tag that is usually attached to the top of the toy.

Checking these tags can be a way to spot a fake, as tag errors can include:

  • Font changes
  • Changes to capitalisation
  • Font and logo colour changes
  • Spelling mistakes
  • Incorrect information on the tag, which can be as obvious as an incorrect toy name
  • Only buy from official suppliers

The only way to achieve complete peace of mind is to order a Jellycat plushie from an official supplier.

Jellycat work closely with their official Distributors and Agents so choosing an official supplier means you can be sure you are getting a genuine Jellycat and not a fake or dupe.
