How to care for your Jellycat toys
As all Jellycat toys are tested to the European Safety Standard (EN71 parts 1, 2 & 3), and the US Safety Standards (ASTM), they are considered safe for all ages from birth, except where they have an age recommendation hangtag.
Because of this, they are likely to get a little mucky and need to be washed from time to time.
But how do you care for your Jellycat toys and clean them if they get dirty?
Do Jellycat soft toys need to be cleaned?
While it is completely up to you, if handled regularly, experts advise that your soft toy should be cleaned around once a month.
You should remove dust and surface dirt with a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum upholstery tool and clean any surface marks.
However, there are occasions when a more thorough wash is needed, including:
- After bouts of sickness or diarrhoea, after gastroenteritis etc.,
- During worm or lice outbreaks
- If there have been instances of cold or the flu
- For those who suffer from asthma or allergies – soft fur can trap dust and allergens
In these instances, your Jellycat may need a spa day to get them looking their best and remove any lingering nasties.
Can Jellycat be washed?
Jellycat advises a surface wash for all of their toys with gentle soaps, followed by rinses with cool water- unless the sew-in label states otherwise.
A surface wash involves cleaning the toy in a much gentler way than using a washing machine, which can be too agitating and cause damage.
- To surface wash your toy, submerge the toy in cool water and once saturated, softly squeeze out the stuffed toy. You can repeat this multiple times until the water that you squeeze out runs clear.
- To remove surface stains, use a mild detergent and a toothbrush or other soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away any marks.
- The final stage is to thoroughly rinse the soft toy, making sure no grime or detergent is trapped. To achieve this, immerse the toy in cool water and squeeze it out until the water runs clear and no suds remain. (You can skip this step if you are not using soap to remove lingering grime or stains.)
To dry your Jellycat, use a hair dryer with little or no heat, which will help the fur bounce back – or hang them out to dry on the washing line on a sunny day.
Can Jellycat toys go in the dryer?
Although much faster, Jellycat does not advise that their soft toys go in the tumble dryer. Similarly, they do not advise washing with a washing machine, even on a delicate cycle.
