If you’re a lover of cute and original soft toys, then you’ve no doubt seen or heard of brands like Jellycat (the creators of Amuseables) and Aurora World (the brand behind Palm Pals). Both have a big following in soft toy collector communities, but if you’re new to the world of collecting cuddly toys, you might not be sure what the difference is between Jellycats and Palm Pals.

First of all, Aurora World is a South Korean company formed in 1981, which became known for its high-quality cute designs and the launch of its green initiative in manufacturing eco-friendly soft toys from 2020 onwards – including the Palm Pals range. Jellycat, on the other hand, is a British company founded in 1999, which became a leading UK brand due to the popularity of its Bashful Bunnies and Amuseable food designs.

Over the years, both plush brands have become popular around the world, with a selection of their soft toys found in most toy shops and gift shops. However, if you’re struggling to choose the perfect plushie as a present and aren’t sure which brand to look at, here is our quick guide to the defining features of Palm Pals vs Jellycat soft toys to help you make your mind up!

Jellycat vs Palm Pals

Sizes & Features

When it comes to the size of Palm Pals, the clue is in the name – they’re the perfect size to perch in the palm of a hand, sitting at 13cm tall. Jellycat soft toys can vary from around the same size up to massive plushes almost a metre high.

This small size makes Palm Pals more easily collectable for some people, while others might prefer the variety of sizing in most designs offered by Jellycat. These include tiny Jellycat keychains at 10cm tall (a Palm Pals keychain is not yet available, but it could be possible in the future!).

Both brands typically use black plastic beads for eyes and stitched black smiley mouths, but each has their own hallmarks. Palm Pals have embroidered pink cheeks and round little feet attached directly to the body, while Jellycats typically have long floppy limbs – most notably, Amuseables come with dangly brown legs with chunky feet that look a bit like space boots.

When it comes to textures, both are known to be very soft and enjoyably squishy. Palm Pals use fabrics with short velvety fur, while Jellycats tend to feature a greater mix, making the most of fluffy features and corduroy-style elements.

Palm Pals are floppier due to being a little under-stuffed with recycled fibres and plastic beans, while Jellycats generally have a firmer structure with a mix of new polyester and plastic bean filling throughout.

Names & Collections

What sets both Aurora World and Jellycat apart from traditional ranges of teddy bears and stuffed animals is their creativity. These brands take inspiration from a wide range of animals and real-life objects – from food and plants to sports gear – and put their own recognisable spin on them, making everyday items into cute cuddly companions.

Unlike Jellycat, Aurora World partners with other brands to create versions of various licensed characters, but they also have their own original ranges, with Palm Pals being the most well-known. Each Palm Pal has a hangtag with a name, number, and characteristics, letting you know their personality – for example, Happy Hamster is joyful and energetic.

Within the Palm Pals range, there are different collections, such as barn, zoo, forest, aquatic, and pre-historic animals, plus more critters, food cravings, and whimsical designs like weather elements. There are also seasonal styles for summer and Christmas, just like Jellycat, which also releases seasonal designs every year.

Jellycat has a much wider selection due to its huge variety of stylised collections, from the Bashfuls and Tumbletufts to the Amuseables and Ocean Life ranges. As they mainly produce designs based on animals and food items, there is a lot of crossover with Palm Pals characters, but the former tends to go for looks that are a little more realistic.

While Jellycat launches multiple new ranges throughout every year, including Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Christmas limited editions, Aurora World is gradually releasing more Palm Pals designs over time, which are less likely to be retired the way Jellycats often are.

Age Ranges & Safety

Despite collecting soft toys being widely seen as a hobby just for children, it’s become ever more popular over the years with the development of social media. People of all ages now proudly show off their collections and make it their mission to collect the variants of their favourite designs – all while these plushies still make lovely gifts for babies and little kids.

The majority of Jellycat and Aurora World toys are suitable for all ages and safe from birth, but in instances where a soft toy may not be safe for a baby due to the size or fibre shedding, the product description and label will specify this information along with cleaning instructions.

As major international companies, both aim to produce the highest quality soft toys, complying with EN71 and ISO 8124 safety standards in the UK and Europe. Jellycat follows their own Responsible Sourcing Code of Practice for an ethical supply chain, while Aurora World famously uses 100% recycled and recyclable materials for Palm Pals and other ranges.

For both brands, most of their soft toys are surface washable by hand only, but when a deeper clean is needed, the label should say whether it’s possible to clean them in the washing machine on a mild cycle (no more than 30°C). Definitely avoid tumble drying or ironing them, though!

Are Palm Pals better than Jellycats?
